Canadians win 2010 USA College Titles

Toronto’s Colin West and Laura Gemmell, both representing Harvard won men’s and women’s College Squash Association (CSA) titles this past weekend at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.

West, the tournaments number 1 seed and a former Canadian National Junior Squad member and current Canadian National Espoir training Squad member defeated Princeton’s Todd Harrity in straight games 11-9, 13-11, 11-1. The senior and co-captain at Harvard caps off a successful 4 year college career where in addition to winning the 2009/2010 Individual title he has racked up first team all American honours in 2008/2009 and 2007/2008 (with 2009/2010 yet to be announced), all ivy team honours in 2008/2009, 2007/2008 and 2006/2007 (with 2009/2010 yet to be announced), and was named the 2006/2007 Ivy league Rookie of the year. West finished the 2009/2010 season with a 16-1 record.

In addition to his role with Harvard, Colin has represented Canada at the 2006 World Junior Championships, the 2006 and 2008 World University Championships.

Gemmell, the top ranked player in the CSA this past season and current Canadian National Senior Squad member defeated Trinity’s Pamela Hathway 3-2 (12-10, 5-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-9). Prior to the individual title the first year player from Toronto helped Harvard claim the 2009/2010 CSA team title 2 weeks earlier. Gemmell finished the 2009/2010 season with a perfect 16-0 record.

Gemmell becomes the 3rd Canadian in the past 4 years to win the CSA Individual title with Kyla Grigg of Calgary winning the title in 2007 while playing for Harvard and Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, current national senior squad member and WISPA #46 won the title in 2008 while playing for Yale.

In addition to her role with Harvard, Laura has represented Canada at the 2005, 2007 and 2009 World Junior Championships.

    You know as a proud Canadian I should have commented on this before! Pierre thanks for bringing this back to th first page. I think next up for the Canada in squash is the University Championships in July down in Australia. Go Canada!
